After a 13-year addiction to drugs and alcohol, Crandell chose Tri for sobriety.

Living in his car, doing four grams of cocaine and drinking more than a fifth of whiskey a day, Todd Crandell had lost his family, friends, and countless jobs. Any other alcohol or drugs within reach were fair game for Crandell. ON his third DWI, Crendell’s blood alcohol level was .36 (.40 being legally dead). Crandell bottomed out.

Racing for Recovery™ Holds Inaugural 5k

Nearly 300 runners took part in the inaugural Racing for Recovery 5K run/walk held Oct. 26 at Lourdes College in Sylvania. The race was organized as the first official event for a new non-profit organization that has drug abuse prevention as its mission.

Racing for Recovery™

Bobbi Finn-Will, Probation, has been holding a series of support group meetings in the evening hours as well as on Saturdays for clients in the Probation Department with substance abuse. These sessions are being held for clients and their families to discuss addictions and try to come up with solutions or at least help folks get pointed in the right direction. Bobbi reports that the department has hired a guest speaker, Todd Crandell, who has been of utmost help and support to her clients in the way of providing direction and a real-life sense that you can make a change in your life.

Ironman™ Runs, Bikes and Swims Into Town

If you see hordes of men and women running the streets of Madison in short shorts this weekend, fear not. The Ironman Triathlon swings into town Saturday for its inaugural Ironman Wisconsin event. The race, starting promptly at 7 a.m. on Sept. 15, is the Midwest qualifying event for the 2003 Ironman National Championship in Hawaii. Close to 2200 competitors will race, and 90 percent are expected to finish the race.

MADISON, Wisc. – Ironman triathlon is about determination, courage and perseverance, but, above all, it exemplifies the triumph of the human spirit. For most of the athletes, it is a physical feat of epic proportions, but for Todd Crandell (Sylvania, Ohio) it represents a victory of iron will over the chains of addiction.

The Road to Recovery

During an awful two-week period in 1985, Todd Crandell was expelled from Northview High School, kicked out of his house, fired from his job and pulled over for a DWI.

At that point, wouldn’t most people realize they had a problem and get some help? “Oh, no,” Crandell says. “It was full steam ahead. I wasn’t equating it with the drugs and alcohol – I was blaming everybody else.”

Putting guns inside his mouth and threatening suicide. Telling his parents where they could go.
Telling the whole world where it could go. And use a one-way ticket, thank you very much.

Triathlete Has Overcome Addiction

MUNCIE – Todd Crandell will begin today’s Muncie Endurathon in much the same way as the other 1,100 athletes competing. But his journey began much earlier in life and in a dangerous way.

Crandell, of Sylvania, Ohio, is a former drug and alcohol addict. As a teen, a typical day for him consisted of 4 grams of cocaine and a fifth and a half of whiskey.
